For over 25 years, CTO Lighting has called London home. Not just our base of operations, but a constant source of inspiration. Every one of our designs begins life in our North London studio. It’s here that ideas take form, that materials are shaped, that light is studied with care. But step outside the studio and the city takes over. London is where we test, explore and imagine. It shapes how we design, and more importantly, why we design.
There are few places in the world where you’ll find Georgian symmetry next to Brutalist concrete, or Victorian ironwork casting shadows over a Modernist doorway. London constantly evolves but never forgets its past. That coexistence of contrast and continuity is central to the way we design. We’re drawn to the tension between old and new, softness and strength, light and dark. Our lights don’t mimic these styles. Instead, they respond to them. They complement, they soften, they anchor.
To walk through London is to walk through centuries of design decisions. From the terraced houses of Islington to the garden squares of Kensington, the architecture of this city doesn’t just set a scene. It carries memory. We’re inspired by the details: the polished brass of a door knocker, the patina of age on stone steps, the rhythm of light and shadow along a colonnade at dusk. These subtle textures find their way into our finishes. Into the way alabaster diffuses light. Into the tension of a perfectly brushed bronze armature. The city teaches us to be precise, but never clinical. Confident, but never loud.
London is more than its buildings. It’s the energy in the streets, the pace of the people, the density of culture. As a brand, we thrive on the buzz that surrounds us. The conversations overheard in Soho. The design fairs in Clerkenwell. The exhibitions in Whitechapel. The quiet moments on the river, watching the sun move across the skyline.
We believe that just being here makes you more creative. The diversity of people, languages and disciplines sparks new perspectives. CTO is proudly British, but our team and our clients span the globe. London is the creative capital of the world because it holds opposites in tension. It embraces both heritage and experimentation. Legacy and reinvention. That duality runs through our entire collection. It’s what makes a CTO light feel timeless, yet always of its time.
When we speak about British design, we’re not speaking about nostalgia. We’re speaking about considered restraint. About materials chosen for how they age, not just how they shine. About silhouettes that feel inevitable, not overworked. London has taught us that. It’s taught us to edit. To find strength in simplicity. To know when to let the materials speak.
The city that inspires our designs is the same one that houses them. CTO lights can be found across London, casting warm light over dining tables, staircases, gallery walls, hotel lobbies and quiet corners.
We work with architects and designers throughout the city to light homes that reflect the people who live in them. You’ll find our pieces in tall-ceilinged Chelsea townhouses and in low-slung mid-century apartments in Highgate. In Victorian terraces in Hampstead. In clean-lined new builds along the river. Each space is different, but our lights bring cohesion, warmth and intention.
They also feature in some of the most respected hotels in the capital, where materiality and atmosphere matter deeply. These are spaces where design meets experience and where the quality of the light has lasting impact.
In a city like London, the only constant is change. And yet, the best design remains. It adapts. It evolves. It quietly asserts its place. This belief in enduring design sits at the core of everything we do. We don’t make lights for a season. We make them to last — in material, in feeling and in meaning.
When you walk through a house we lit fifteen or even twenty years ago, you still feel the same intention in every glow and shadow. In Chris and Clare’s home, one of our earliest projects, several CTO pieces have remained untouched for seventeen years. Not because of sentiment, but because they still feel right. The materials have matured. The forms remain relevant. The light still flatters the space. That is our definition of timelessness.
It’s not just designers and clients who feel the difference. Electricians regularly tell us how well our lights are made. That they’re easy to install. That everything has been thought through. That matters to us. Behind every fitting is a commitment to quality that goes beyond surface beauty.
This is our ode to London.
The city that shaped us.
And that we, in our small way, help to shape in return.
Every light we create carries a part of this city with it.
Our city.
Our canvas.
Our muse.
